Amazon.com Product Description What does the American Dream mean today?
For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don’t.
Beginning with the 1997 release of the original Grand Theft Auto, the GTA series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. This pedigree of success guarantees that the highly anticipated eleventh game in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, will garner at least as much attention if not more.

    The Plot
Grand Theft Auto IV is a brand new adventure in the GTA universe following the experiences of Nikolai "Niko" Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed eastern European country whose troubled pa st and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko’s search for the American Dream and a much needed fresh start, hits an immediate snag when the rags to riches story Roman spun to pique Niko's interest is exposed as not only a complete fabrication, but a ploy to enlist Niko’s well-known skills as a tough guy against the ample list of enemies clamoring for Roman’s debt-ridden blood.
Because Roman is the only person Niko knows in Liberty City he begrudgingly accepts his role as Roman’s protector despite the deception. But as time goes on Niko comes into his own, and his experience on the wrong side of the tracks proves more valuable than he could have ever imagined as he fights for survival and later supremacy on the crime ridden streets of Liberty City.
    Game Environments
Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for GTA IV. Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in GTA IV are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cutouts, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko’s interaction with them.
    Gameplay
Historically GTA games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed to a great extent in GTA IV. Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centered on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay.
    Features
Aside from the car jacking and a detailed city environment here are the new features for GTA IV:
    • Improved combat system - Now you can use cover and also a target lock system, which allows you to take out targets with greater ease and accuracy. Plus, you can engage in some hand-to-hand combat if you can't get your hands on a piece quick enough.
    • Cell phone - Not just for basic phone calls anymore. Use your in-game cell phone to receive missions via SMS, snap photos, and ZiT (tag) songs that can be downloaded exclusively on Amazon.com/mp3.
    • Free time - In between missions you can take advantage of "me" time. There are gentleman's clubs, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, and bars, which all house unique activities.
    • Take a break from the storyline - A variety of side missions allow you to help run a car service, "borrow" cop cars, assassinate targets, help solve problems for those on the street, or take to the air with stunt jumps that are scattered all over the city.
    • Control your own fate - Throughout the game choice moments will arrive causing you to make a decision that will affect relationships and money.
    Multiplayer
Give Niko a rest and create your own multiplayer "hero." GTA has added multiplayer modes allowing you to take your creation out to play online in competitive, co-op, and free form modes. Competitive mode has you fighting against the cops, jacking cars, or racing to finish odd jobs. Co-op challenges you and your friends with various tasks including Hangman's NOOSE where you are responsible for escorting a wanted kingpin to a safe extraction point. Freeform lets you and 15 others lose on Liberty City. Use this mode to hit up the bar and play virtual darts versus each other or head out to the streets and set up your own drag races. If you can dream it, you can do it in Freeform mode.
ZiT: We'll Spot The Song For You
When playing Grand Theft Auto IV, if you hear a song that you are interested in buying as an MP3, all you have to do is dial ZiT-555-0100 on your in-game mobile phone and a text message will be sent to you with the name of the artist and the title of the track. The next time you log in at the Rockstar Games Social Club, you will find 30-second previews of all the songs you have ZiT'ed while playing the game. You can add them to your basket there and click to purchase at Amazon MP3, or you can find them all at www.amazon.com/gtamusic.

     "Fun But It's a Pain" 2009-12-05
    By John Mccoy (dublin)
Let me start by saying this game is buggy and definitely the worst outing from what I would have called a solid development house. The biggest problem, even after patching, and this game is a year old, is that there are several graphic bugs. The biggest is the graphics fade. For instance occasionally I'll be driving down the road and the road will turn into what looks like grey mud with fog on top and then flip back eventually and repeat. Smaller issues continue to pop up as well, like all of the sudden the on/off freeway ramps will appear to be blocked by a long grey slab which, thankfully, I can still drive through it. I've had the same problems on two computers using different graphic cards, both nVidia, a 260 GTX and an 8800 GT. The many graphic issues with this game have been well documented so I'll let the rest go.

Installation and running this game is a ridiculous continual slap in the face. Not only do you need to deal with Windows Live, a first for me and not at all enjoyable or useful in my opinion (it feels like they took Steam, ripped it's guts out and tried to put it in a pretty box that they're gonna make you open). Second, Rockstar Social Club is a necessary installation and not only will it attempt to make itself launch when your computer starts but it must be running when you launch the game and will reinstall the auto launcher each time you run the game. This makes for a fun mini-game after I'm done playing of cleaning up after it so it won't auto launch itself the next day.

As for the game itself, so far I am finding it enjoyable even with the problems. It's not groundbreaking, there are several uneven spots, such as the Snow Storm mission that suddenly really amps up the difficulty and pretty much keeps it there, but this is small and you'll adjust, just expect to replay this mission a few times. If you're like me you'll enjoy the random chaos you can create in any GTA game and pretty much that's why I bought it, then you won't be too disappointed. I would have preferred to get it as a digital download but for some reason Rockstar is keeping the prices on these at any retailer at the original asking price, $50. I wouldn't pay that for this game then, because of the many bugs, and definitely wouldn't now so Amazon is your best shot at this point.

I have to say before I played this game, even after San Andres which I didn't like, I had a much higher opinion of Rockstar. With the way they handled and continue to handle, the lack of patches to fix these old problems says a lot, I wouldn't trust them any further than any other house that would make it's customers jump through this many hoops for what is still, a year later, an unfinished game.

     "Best without the keyboard" 2009-12-04
    By L & D RN (Phoenix, AZ)
My only experience with gaming was playing the Sims 2 & 3 on PC. I am not generally a console gamer, but this game looked really fun when my sister's boyfriend had it for his PS3. Alas, when he moved out, he took his PS3 with him. So nearly a year later, I see this game at Wal-Mart for PC and just had to take it home. My experience with this was decidedly mixed. I don't like having to sign in, even for off-line gaming. The whole keyboard command thing I could have done without. (press WASD just to make the dude walk? really?) If you could have seen me the day I bought it, you'd have died laughing. The names I called this game aren't printable. So the next day, I tried to take it back, but of course they don't take back open games (darn copyright laws!). So, determined to actually play this game, and avoid keyboard use, I then went to Best Buy, and the very awesome PC-gaming employee there recommended I buy an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows. I did this and now I can play (albeit not skillfully...yet). The graphics are gorgeous and I really like the score/soundtrack. If I didn't have the Controller, I would have given this game one or two stars, mostly for it's complexity of commands. One suggestion that I could make to Rockstar is that they should mention/recommend that Xbox Controller in the product description. I would have just bought one right away and saved myself a trip.

"Not As Bad As People Make it Out to Be" 2009-11-24
By James Presley (Sacramento, California, United States of America)
Contrary to what many people say, this game isn't as hard to install, or play, as they would have you think.

Everything needed to run this game was included on the Dual-DVD set, so all you have to do during installation is switch the DVDs, accept the terms of each software, and click next a lot. The SecuROM is virtually invisible after installed. My computer's performance is the exact same after SecuROM was installed, as before and it has had absolutely NO negative effects thus far. Anyone who uses MSN messenger (which is a large population) should have a Windows LIVE account, so that aspect shouldn't be an issue. If it is, it takes 3 minutes to do (I timed it). The Rockstar Social Club took 5 minutes to set up, select an avatar, and link my Xbox Live and Games for Windows LIVE account. The Games for Windows LIVE is no different than an Xbox Live account; just like you have to set up an Xbox live account to use your Xbox to it's full potential, you must set up an Games for Windows LIVE account. On top of that, the Games for Windows LIVE will act just like an Xbox live account, as you will see your friends, gamerscore, and messages all from your LIVE account (if linked) and you will receive achievements similar to those on the Xbox version of the game.

Now, on to the performance. On a system with a Q6600, 8800GT, and 4GB of RAM, this game runs amazingly. My settings are as follows:

    Texture Quality: Medium

    Reflection Resolution: Very High

    Water Quality: Very High

    Shadow Quality: Very High

    Texture Filter Quality: Highest

    View Distance: 18/100

With these settings, on my system (Not Overclocked) I get a solid 35-40 FPS and the game looks and runs as good as I could expect from an 8800GT. I've experienced absolutely no video lag while running these settings.

All in all, most everyone here is fear mongering when they say this game will install a bunch of invasive software. If you have half a brain, you will be able to set up and run the game as intended. As for the people with relic systems, they should have read the minimum system requirements before purchasing this game. I've emulated the process, and honestly, it should take no more than an hour to install, set up, and start playing the game, if done correctly. If you don't have an hour to spare setting this game up, then don't buy it. The one hour set up time is a small price to pay for limitless hours of play.

"A few years old and still amazing" 2009-11-05
    By B. Jones
This game is a few years old now, but is still one of the best RPG's out there. With the game of the year addition, playing it for the first time you will not be disappointed. The scenery is still among the best out there with individual detailing down to individual blades of grass. The weapons show pockmarks if they're old, the water looks incredible, and the spells are well done. The only thing that I can find as a negative in this game is in the beginning, the distances you have to travel can be a little frustrating, you might spend 3 of your first 5 hours just walking some where if you haven't played before. The story lines are amazing, especially the main story. I love that as you level, the NPC's and foes increase in difficulty accordingly.

If you are into mythical RPG's, you will absolutely love this game. And at less than $30, you can't go wrong even if you didn't like it. 5 stars through and through

I bought this game before, from a secondhand video game store. It was thirty five dollars! I found it on Amazon and thought i'd give this one a try, since my old game stopped working. I didn't expect this one to be all that good. When i got it in the mail- rather quickly, i might add- i realized it was THREE games in one! All for eleven dollars! I am totally satisfied with this purchase. The quality is even better than my last one, and now I can enjoy all three games, too!

"If you *loved* Bethesda's game The ElderScrolls3: Morrowind; then you'll like Oblivion" 2009-09-21
By S. Burroughs (S. Calif, USA)

for me, Morrowind was the beginning of my insanity with the Elder Scrolls games and Bethesda- whom makes them (note: and Fallout 3). I absolutely adored Morrowind (game of the year edition- ie: GOTY edition) and played it for nearly 2 years without even getting around to doing the *main quest*. I loved it.... and ive ended up doing the same with Oblivion (also GOTY edition) and consequentionally, will likely also do so with Fallout 3 GOTY edition when it comes out as well- and i usually dont like shooter games.

ah....but we're here to talk Oblivion. Ill be the first to say that Oblivion isnt Morrowind by any means- definately 2 different areas of the world of Tamriel, and two different games- and rightly so. Who wants to play the same old thing with simply a new coat of paint? I'll say that i beleive that Oblivion has been dumbed down a bit for this round- and im not sure why. you can join all the factions- pretty much from the word "go".... which was lovely- but i liked the dilemma of really hammering out the pros and cons in Morrowind as to *what* guild or household to join and the ramifications of that decision. (these people dont get along with these guys, these other guys hate those guys...etc) And there really wasnt much of that in Oblivion. I also thought that the story lines, tho wonderfully in depth, could have been a bit more intricate- and the decision making could have been a bit more complex as it was on occasion in Morrowind.

I will say- i do like how they made playing a vampire a bit more (realistic?) doable in this game- which in reality could be worked around- as it is in the game, with a bit of careful planning and thought. Its nice that all the magic armors/items in the game are constant effect instead of having limited effect/duration items as well- which is handy- but it also takes away the planning and juggling to be done frequently in Morrowind- which could have used a bit more constant effect items..... dumbs it down a bit i felt- not having to really think and plan what i was doing and how etc.

The expansion packs Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles are both exciting, grand and welcome editions to the game and i was thrilled to have them. I loved the Shivering Isles especially- probalby because it fondly reminds me of Morrowind somehow- maybe in its darkness and feel and a bit of *how* it looks reminds me of Vardenfell. The Knights of the Nine was a great epic quest(s) ......and the Shivering Isles was another incredible, long, and involved series of quests..... that and Sheogorath- the Madgod is quite disturbing. lol.

if you are a fan of western RPGs- id suggest pickign Oblivion GOTY up- its a great game..... it'll grab your attention and you'll have a hard time pulling yourself away from it.

    - id suggest picking up Morrowind (GOTY) as well- if you can forgive some clunky fighting mechanics, and dated game design for a great story and game that'll suck you in

"CRPG Trinity -- Baldur's Gate, Morrowind and Oblivion +++" 2009-09-01
By Kevin Kiersky (Olympia, WA USA)
For me, Baldur's Gate, Morrowind and Oblivion, are the CRPG Trinity -- especially in their most updated and extended versions -- 4-in-1 Boxset for Baldur's Gate I & II -- and Game-of-the-Year sets for each of Elder Scrolls III & IV [Morrowind and Oblivion series]. In addition, for each game-series, the separate world-maps and game-manuals are quite useful [these may or may not be in your particular box-set]. Each of these game-series has still current [2009] substantial online community & modding resources. Each is a true CRPG [computer role-playing game]. Their hi-tech is NOT cutting-edge, each is NOT multi-player online and they are NOT linear-plot force-fed hack-and-slash bloody orgies [but you can play as "hard" or "soft" and as "dark" or "fair" as you choose]. What IS well-and-good about each and every one of these fun-and-fine "Old Classic" games -- is that they really ARE richly-balanced deep Medieval-Magic RPG fantasy-adventures that you create in free-will, thru hundreds of hours, as you wander-and-wonder thru vast worlds.

So, for Baldur's Gate, Morrowind and Oblivion, you can follow well-done Main Quests or follow many side-paths great-and-small -- in any order and timing as you like. Each game-series is very colorful with grand good music -- and with lots of stories and in-game books to read for pleasure and profit. For each game-series, you can re-play [and survive] many times via new-games and save-games. Be aware that too many save-games [and mods] can slow-down, distort, freeze or crash such CRPGs. By the way, for Morrowind, you can access its save-games by going into your computer's "All Programs" and going into "Bethesda Softworks" -- expand "Morrowind" -- seeing another list including "Morrowind" and expand that -- click-on "Open file location" -- then click-on "Compatibility Files" on that window's top bar [NOT in the main file-list below]. In the "Compatibiltiy Files" list you can expand "Saves" [save-games] to click-on and delete as many as you want. Sword-and-Sorcery at its best +++

There's a huge compatability issue with ATI graphics cards... if you have a Dell & didn't pay to upgrade your video card it will probably crash on you. I have a Dell built in 2006 (the game came out in 2005) and the game crashes constantly. My computer has 2GB of RAM and the fastest processor you could get at the time, but the graphics card has issues with Civ 4 so beware...

Also 2KGames website is shut down on Civ 4; doesn't have any active support and you can't download any patches there to fix this bug...

     "Wish I hadn't bought this one" 2009-11-28
    By J. Ahrenholtz (United States)
I've played many turn based strategy games over the years, they're my favorite. This one though, I can't make heads or tails of. Played it for about 2 hours and was not only bored stiff but have no idea what I should be doing. It's so bad! Someone noted that the graphics are like "Age of Empires I in 98" but that is being far too kind, they are not even that good. The description "beautifully detailed, living 3D world" is very missleading. It looks like a game that would be a free download. I really don't mind the lack of good graphics so much if it's a game that draws me in but this one does not. I paid $40 for it unfortunately, wish I had tried a demo first.

Civ IV is a game that puts you at the head of different civilizations. You are charged with the responsibility to expand your empire while keeping it solvent and safe from aggressors. One can have fun and learn about the past. The games keep me playing long after the sun sets. By the way I'm in my 50's!!

"Lack of Zone of Control ruins game" 2009-11-03

There are so many improvements in the game mechanics compared to Civilization II, it's incredible.

But dropping the zone of control ruins everything.

One great innovation of Civ IV is the introduction of special resource squares. If you want to produce military units that require iron, you must have a road leading to an iron deposit from one of your city squares, and a mine built on the square.

Alternately, you can set up an exchange with another civilization. If they have more than one iron deposit they can trade that with one of your surplus resources.

The problem is with defending your resources. Enemy units, most notably barbarians, can just pass right by any unit you have defending one of these squares and destroy (pillage) the road leading back to your city square. With the road cut off, you may lose the ability to produce iron-based military units throughout your civilization!

The more succesful you are, the more barbarians the A.I. will send your way. So success means you spend all your resources building military units to protect your resources.

In Civ II units exerted a zone of control that meant no enemy could move from one adjacent square to another adjacent square. So, if enemies got next to your unit, they would have to either retreat or attack. It made exploration difficult at times, but it would have been so valuable in Civ IV.

Point of clarification - the A.I. will always be sure to send one unit to either side. If you attack one of them, the other one has free range to pillage your territory. Putting two strong defensive units per valuable square is too expensive. The main city tiles are so fortified with city walls and castles that you can make them all but invulnerable with a garrison of archers or longbowmen, which don't even require either copper or iron to produce.

You can just turn off barbarians altogether, but that solution is not acceptable to me.

The zone of control was probably dropped because of too many complaints and a need to market newer games to less intelligent people. Which is why people like me throw video games away after a couple of weeks even when we do deign to purchase them.
