"Great RPG and not to bad of a shooter either" 2009-11-20
By Debra Pankiewicz
From the very begining I realised how well made this game was. With it's cinimatic opening it allows one to be able to realy create the character. It then allows the player to interact with tid bits of the characters life. When I finily made it out to the "wastelands" I was already fairly cofident in the controls. This is when the RPG element realy comes out you can act as a good guy or a bad guy you can even play as a guy just trying to get by til he can get his next fix.The shooter element take place just about every time you step out in to the "wastelands" with weapon such as The 9mm, the 32 handgun, the asault rifle, the chinese asault rifle, the hunting rifle, the 5mm machine gun, the missile launcher, and more. Be sure to confirm that you computer meets requirement before buying.

"Sequel worthy of the Fallout brand. Well done, Bethesda..." 2009-11-20
By Johnny H (Colorado United States)
I'm a huge, huge fan of Fallout 1 and 2, which I played through as a teen dozens of times. But not so much of a crazy fan that making F3 was a blasphemy. I was excited about a Fallout resurrection and about a developer as capable as Bethesda taking over.

Was I worried Fallout 3 would be watered down, consolised, FPS'd and mass marketed to the masses with a teen label? Hell yes... Fortunately that didn't happen too much and Fallout 3 is a stunning success of a game.

The main strength of F3 is, without any doubt, the setting and atmosphere. I had many, many moments where I had the revelation F3 was something special, to be savored. Some such moments of the top of my head:

+Clearing endless amounts of raiders from the DC subway tunnels as a pathetic newb in early game. Stressful, never ending combat in a dark, shattered and twisted labyrinth.

+Going through the haunting ruins of a former vault with some ironic song from the 40s blaring from my Pip-boy, "Chop, chop, choppin' that meat!"

+Reaching the Washington monument and taking the elevator up to look down in awe upon the Capital wastes... Too many others to list.

There's just so much going on out in the wastes, so much to explore. And it's all Fallout, very true to the intent of the originals... You can spend weeks out there just taking in the sights and making your imprint on the wastes.

I still relied on VATS tactics (turn based) in nearly every fight. But the real time FPS aspect adds much fun factor... There's nothing like dropping a super mutant from a half mile a way with a powerfully scoped sniper rifle. Or 3 rapid ghoul head shots with a 44 magnum in real time... Makes me wish there was a rumble mouse.

Everything in F3 is fantastic. Everything!... except perhaps the main story. It's by no means bad, but it seems tremendously un-epic for what it should have been. It seems to have only about half a dozen meaningful steps, of those only a few are really memorable... What a waste they couldn't compare to the Master of F1 or the cynical and involved plot of the Enclave in F2. I remember being utterly shocked when entering the final battle (wtf? that's it?!). The final battle had some really cool stuff going on, but it seemed like a consolatory apology to me for being so woefully inadequate. With so much awesome in the game, it's really inexcusable to have such a cursory main plot.

The addons are cool. They add unique and diverse new settings, characters and things to do. But... again, their main stories are a little weak. Don't get me wrong they add to the game in a very cool way. But the writing still leaves something to be desired.

MODS: check em out, they really make the game amazing. My favorite was probably "GNRadio: More Where That Came From" which adds a ton more tracks to the old timey radio. Tracks the mod author took from public domain and all fit the feel of Fallout 3 perfectly; fantastic work. The music of Fallout (greatly increased by said mod) adds something indescribable to the atmosphere, it really makes Falloutverse feel like 50s cold war paranoia gone nuclear actually happened. Also, checkout FOOK (Fallout Overhaul Kit) which brilliantly reskins a lot of the textures.

Do be careful to not go overboard on mods however, as some can conflict with each other making for a far less stable experience.

All in all, one of the best games I've ever played... Utterly mesmerizing. I will be back many times and part of the Capitol Wasteland will stay with me forever.

Story/writing: 7.5/10

Graphics: 9.2

Game play: 9.5

Replayability: 10

Setting: 11

Overall: 9.5

Biggest letdown: not being able to kill children with a Super Sledge critical strike to the groin :(

System specs: i7 920 w/ 15-25% overclock, 6GB DDR3 XMP, 2x RAID0 640 caviar black, ATI-HD 4890, Win7... Ran without hickup on max settings.

"A Game for Epic Gamers" 2009-11-20
By Brandon Burroughs (Atlanta, GA USA)
This is right up Bethesda's alley. I've been a rabid fan of the series ever since I picked out Fallout as a birthday gift just about 12 years ago. The first two titles were monstrous for the amount of side-stories you could play through--the concept of non-linear gameplay was pretty new to me, and I fell in love right away.

My friend has been a big Bethesda fan since Oblivion--and after checking it out, I understand why. I'm not sure I would've picked the first-person, real-time gameplay style... but it works. It works well. And the finished product is nothing short of a masterpiece.

The GOTY edition is especially great, because it allows the player open access to the level 30 cap and several of the added areas in a nonlinear way. You still have to play through the original game to get to the Broken Steel storyline, but even that is more about mopping up leftovers than tacking on "new" content.

This game is pretty close to perfect. I can't imagine any fans of the series being anything less than thrilled with the story and gameplay, and fans of Oblivion will find that Bethesda has managed to put even more care and detail into all aspects of the game.

 "FREEZ and CRASH" 2009-11-19
By A. burt
I bought this game cause I heard it was fun. However, all it does 99.9% of the time is either freez or crash to the desktop.I have updated to 1.7 and downloaded Windows Live For Windows as directed by the Bethesda tech, that I emailed for help. Nothing has worked, I suggest save you money and being ticked off,DON'T BUY this JUNK!

 "Just Freaking Fun" 2009-11-18
By Houston Guy (Houston, TX USA)
I really enjoy this game. I bought the collector's edition when it first came out. I bought the GOTY version because it has all 5 ad-on packages for less than the cost of buying them separately (all 5 are just under $50 separately or in mini packages).

-

The main portion of the game if very open ended and very enjoyable.

I've completed 3 of the ad-on expansions. They appear to be VERY linear. By this I mean the additional quests require you to do thing in specific order with little flexiblity. So far the ad-ons require you to go from start to finish before you get back to the main game.

All of the ad-ons provide new perks, weapons, and/or equipment that makes each of them worthwhile.

.

Overall for the price it is a great deal especially with the main game.
