I upgraded two computers from KIS 2009 to 2010 without significant event (for the install--note problems later). One was an XP machine, running Windows Defender. 2010 wanted Windows Defender uninstalled prior to the install. The install on the Vista machine was entirely uneventful. On both XP and Vista, I did uninstall the prior version of KIS first, then reboot.
One thing the install program does is look for the latest version prior to installing. So on the second machine I downloaded the latest version first and just installed from there, using the keycode from the CD. I would recommend that for everyone else.
As to the program itself, the interface is changed quite a bit, but still okay. One difference is there is no longer a pause button for the scans. Now if you stop a scan when you restart it gives you the option to resume where you left off.
One new feature is it also provides a "sandbox" feature, where you can supposedly start a program in its own memory space, where it can't affect your system. They have Internet Explorer pre-setup, but you can setup other programs. You start them in that mode from within KIS, not the desktop.
A few weeks after installing 2010 a problem developed on my Vista computer, and it took sometime for me to figure out it was KIS because simply deactivating the program didn't fix the problem. You have to fully uninstall. What the problem was is that it caused slow disc access and printing. Thus, for example, in Windows Explorer, opening the contents of various folders would take 3-4 seconds. It also delayed some program's startup time, and caused a lot of CPU cycles to be used for extended periods of time. I downgraded to 2009 using the latest version from their website, and the same passkey for the program.
One change I would like to see the software make is getting definition updates as part of the install. They already check for updates with the program files. The current system requires that you install, then update the definitions (even if your 2009 definitions were up to date), then download new definitions, and then reboot.

Previously I have tried Norton, McAfee and Bit Defender. Each has had its share of issues and challenges. I recently purchased a new PC with Windows 7 and installed Kaspersky IS2010 on it. Flawless, easy and efficient. After running it for a few weeks, I installed it on my older PC after removing all other virus protections and had the same results.
I am not a PC geek and it has been very easy to use and install.

I run Kaspersky for several years. From XP to my new Vista64 laptop. KIS version 7 was the best one. It was light on the system, and very secure. Things started to go wrong after that. Starting with 2009. KIS works terrible in Vista64 bit. The real pain started after upgrading to 2010. Opera browsers takes 10 more seconds to boot and the same can be said for allot of other softwares. I noticed that my dual core with 4 GB laptop was getting slower and slower with each Windows updated that was rolled out. One night browsing folder and files it became terrible slow. Taking 10 seconds or more to open each folder. I disabled Vista Search Index. Rebooted system several times, check allot of things to get to the problem on what was using so much the disk. All I could find was that the disk access was 4 KB per second !!! Kis was always using somehow allot of CPU but I was blaming this on explorer.exe
So I finally decide to uninstall KIS. It took me like 2 hours so slow it was.
After that I booted and VOILA. Its like a new system. Almost all programs open on the fly, browsing files is a pleasure. And even boot times it no longer 3 minutes. I do happen to do allot of maintaince on my system with with TuneUP which is great but i was realy shocked on how fast everything was without KIS. I had to basically uninstall it completely so I could gain control back of my system. KIS was such a resource hug that I cannot believe I was using it so long. I changed to Norton and the system runs 100% perfectly as it did not had any antivirus. Perfect. KIS is an incredible resource hug on the system and their support is TERRIBLE. I happen to have bought my licenses directly from their website and pay like 40% that you pay for a boxed version. They never even reply your emails. And whats worst they make it hard or almost impossible to contact them. What kind of company is this that avoids paying clients? One year I could not even renew my license and they charged me a new one because I losed my key. Dont get me wrong KIS is a great security tool or I can say WAS.
It has almost nothing new from version to version except their sandbox features which I do like but besides that its not worth the resources it takes to run it even on new machines. My laptop is 4 months old so I cannot imagine how this runs on older systems. Did I mention that upgrading to 2010 changed my master password? Yes. I could not change the KIS setting anymore as it said incorrect password and I had to download a registry patch to reset it.
PLEASE do make yourself a favor. If you use your PC for work its not worth the delay. It increases opening of almost every program in your system by double. Disk access or any kind of file access gets also terrible slow to the point thats unacceptable. I hated norton for year but their version is just amazing. It runs perfectly. I just miss some features like to watch on real time files that are connected to the internet and the fine tuning KIS allowed you. Norton just works out of the box and I could love to play with setting more but its runs incredible smooth that I dont think any security solution right now can match it.

I've used Kaspersky for a number of years, but what a mistake it was to upgrade to the 2010 version. My PC running XP SP3 slowed down quite a bit, web pages took forever to open, and the disk drive was always being accessed. Upon checking their support forums, I found dozens of threads complaining of these same issues. It seems one major offender is that the new rootkit scan gets stuck at 99% and never completes (you can tell that it's running by the "K" icon flashing in the system tray, and if you right-click on that Kaspersky logo, you will see the root kit scan listed at 99%). From what I can tell, it seems mainly to affect XP users, I'm not sure if Vista users have the same issues.
Kaspersky has been promising a fix for the last two weeks, and I think they may have finally released a patch today (11/16). However, time will tell if this resolves all the performance issues.
For now, I've gone back to the 2009 version, and my computer has gone back to normal performance too.
However, the 2010 version is the only one that works with Windows 7, but the current version of it (KIS 2010 build 9.0.0.736) seems to cause Windows 7 machines to crash, lock-up, and slow to a crawl, from what I see reported in their support forum.

Count me as a convert. Aside from the fact that both Norton and McAfee are bloated and intrusive, Kaspersky has some really nice features.
One thing that's a big win for me is how the protection coverage works. Buying this package gives you a license to run the software, and virus database updates for a year for 3 PCs. At the end of that year, the updates stop but the protection level you had when it expired continues as long as you like. With the others (esp. Norton and AVG), your protection stops after the license expires, which is of course a total ripoff that you don't find out until you're 'hooked'. Then your protection turns into 'nagware', bugging you every five minutes until you renew. Up until my switch, I always cursed them under my breath then coughed up money to them (bad). In this game, Kaspersky comes off as the good guys.
You get standard virus coverage, along with some extras that should keep you safe against most malicious websites/emails/downloads/environments. Database updates happen automatically, and you can do all the scanning you might need to.
I'm a big fan of the "Vulnerability Scan" feature. It looks at your base Windows configuration and software versions, and suggests updates for software with known exploits, and config changes that make your system safer (like turning off CD/DVD autorun; you don't still have that on, I hope).
Downsides are that it's a little on the slow side. Even the 2010 version is lacking a little in the maturity department, as I've seen it get wedged a few times for no good reason. Still, I installed it on a machine I knew was infected with something fairly bad, and it was able to clean off the system and get it running again (saving a Windows reinstall). That alone made the software worth the price.
