 "Mediocre at best DLC For Sure" 2009-11-26

First off, this is a review by an avid ex-VALVe fan. I started off with HL1 waaay back, and have bought every VALVe game (except Ricochet and DODS). I bought L4D1, anticipating another great game by VALVe, but the gameplay got so repetitive I deemed the game not worth the $50 price tag.



Now I got L4D2 from a friend for free, and after testing it, I was certainly not impressed. It felt like a $15 DLC rather than a $50 standalone game. They added some new stuff, but the time and energy put into this project is 100% not worth $50.



If I were you, I wouldn't get this game as an upgrade, but if you've never played L4D1, then I'd say $50 is a worthwhile investment in this new interesting genre.

When Valve announced this sequel merely a year after the first one came out, I was rather skeptical. It sounded like it was a glorified expansion pack unworthy of the full price being charged for it. However, having loved and played the first L4D so much and having never been screwed over by Valve's business practices before (also all my friends were getting it on day one I would have felt left out), I decided to give it a chance.



And it was a chance worth taking. Not only is there more content, but it is a more in-depth game, better executed, and plenty of differences to the gameplay to make this a worthy sequel.



Starting off as survivors, like any other sequel the core gameplay is the same. You kill zombies and have to work together to keep the special infected (which are pretty much zombies with special abilities) off of you to get to the end of each level segment. To do this you must have weapons. In contrast to the first game where I mostly relied on the over-powered auto shotgun to get me through the whole level, I actually like to pick and choose a weapon in L4D2 depending on the circumstances. There is more variety to everything: you can get a powerful "tactical" shotgun, or trade that power for the ability to still do a decent amount of spread damage but empty your magazine much more quickly with the combat shotgun. Similarly the M16 is more accurate, while the AK47 is more powerful, and so on. There's even a Desert Eagle to replace the standard pistol that packs a very satisfying punch to your enemies innards. Not to mention the melee weapons. These help raise the bar on the game even further, providing a fun alternative to shooting and letting you get up close and personal to all the gore.



And oh, the gore. This is definitely not a game to let your child play if you are a very protective parent. Blood gushes, limbs fly, and entrails slither. Call me sadistic but I just grin everytime I beat a zombie with a baseball bat and its head soars several feet through the air.



There are even extra grenade items, limited ammo upgrades (i.e. explosive or incendiary ammo) and more.



For those who haven't played the original, the regular campaign against AI zombies was fun for awhile but versus was where the meat of the game lay. One group plays as survivors, while another group plays as special infected to try to keep them from surviving. At the end of the round roles are switched, and whoever gets the most points (i.e. the farthest distance as survivors) through the whole five round campaign wins. As special infected you've still got your original line-up with the hunter who incapacitates survivors when they pounce them, the smoker who drags survivors from afar, the boomer who calls forth a horde of regular zombies, and the tank who just bashes everything into mush.



The new infected add a whole new layer to it all. The jockey can steer a survivor away from the others or into more damaging surroundings, such as a patch of acidic spit spewed from the mouth of the spitter. The latter's ability is also a great way to counteract camping survivors. The charger is a great addition as well, pummeling into a group and pounding a survivor into the ground. All these new infected considerably increases the amount of tactical options you have to eat some brains.



Finales are also overhauled. There are five campaigns and each finale is unique: you might have to run across a long suspension bridge while being bombarded with zombies, or defend a massive rock show stage with all kinds of pyrotechnics to light zombies aflame. Even individual events throughout the game are not quite as cut and dry as just surviving a zombie horde. You might have to run and hit a switch, or even run to an item and return it before the swarms let up.



The new scavenge mode is also incredibly fun. You have to grab as many gas cans and empty them into the car/generator while the other team tries to kill you. It's short and sweet while still providing the high level of competitive gameplay from versus, and with just as much replay value.



The group dynamic, and the comments by the different characters are even more hilarious this time around as well. Especially in regards to fictional racecar driver that some characters venerate while others think "He looks like a jack***", and who's car they end up exuberantly driving away in at the end of one campaign.



It's amazing that Valve was able to pack more content into this sequel in one year than most sequels get after years of development. All this new content, including a better AI director, more dynamic environments (for example, heavy flooding makes you move slower so you might want to run across rooftops instead) makes for a game that is much more complex and entertaining. You have to work together even better as a team to survive this zombie apocalypse, and you'll have a ton of fun doing it.

Left 4 dead 2 has been given a 9.5 from Xbox Magazine and yet it isn't getting as much hype as say, Assassins Creed 2 or Modern Warfare 2. I happen to love this game and the new game modes and graphics are fantastic. I have been waiting forever for it to come out and it's freaking awesome. A Definite must buy!

If you enjoyed the first game then this game is the next step. Built around much of the first game and simply expanding on it, L4D2 is a solid and fun title. It also comes with more levels to play (which the original should have as well) and each level has various twist to make the experience different.



What is different? Well there are more special infected as well as some 'comon infected' which have some interesting twists such as riot cops and biohazard suited zombies. Each are very detailed and even the old zombies are more detailed such as the Boomer and Smoker.



There is also the addition of melee weapons and more variety of equipment to use giving the players many choices on how they want to try and play the round. For example you could take 2 pistols or a frying pan. The pistols give you some range and rapid fire while the melee weapon takes them out better when you get swarmed. Or you could get the "pills' which give you a temp health boost or go for a speed boost which helps you get through crowded areas or make that last little bit of ground to escape when in a tight spot.



In addition to that there are more game modes and the maps can change a little with each pass. Meaning that routes that might be open in one play through might not be in the next. This keeps players on their toes and sometimes gets the team split up which can result in somebody getting hurt bad or taken out all together.



The new game mode is nice too but nothing that is a dramatic change. Its just a more static vs mode which is a nice change of pace but nothing that's a game changer. This would have been a great opportunity to put in some mods similar to what Call of Duty WaW had with trying to hold off a zombie horde. The survival mode kind of does this but that mode is pure chaos and not a very strategic game. I think this part especially they really missed an opportunity.



Overall its a nice update but as many have said this should have been an update to the first game and not a full new game. While it is a lot of fun there is just not much new content or much of a change from the original. Nor did they do much with new game modes. I certainly am enjoying it but I also enjoy the first one still. If you have not played L4D1 then I highly suggest you give that a try first and then if you like that this would be a great addition if you look at it as more of an expansion pack than a full new game.

As a player of L4D I knew I would have to get L4D2. Before the release there was some bitterness of the L4D community saying "Boycott L4D2" because we didn't get what we were promised..or what have you. I was a bit skeptical of these claims. I played L4D2 The DEMO and wasn't very impressed. Good but not amazing, yet still i bought L4D2 and i was NOT disappointed!!



MAPS

Let me just say the demo does NO justice for the game. The new maps are brilliant. For instance, the HARD RAIN campaign takes place in a very stormy New Orleans. The place is filling up with water, hard winds pushing you as you struggle to kill zombies. By time you get back you are knee deep in water. Other maps lead you through swamp lands to an authentic looking plantation house, another where jets are bombing around you, and one more FUN map taking place in a theme park where yes, you can play some of the games in the park. Overall the maps are fun, creative, and challenging.



NEW ZOMBIES

Even more challenging is the addition of new special infected to attack your team. There is now a Spitter(spits acid good), a Charger(charges and knocks down players), a Jockey(jumps on player to control them), and the old favorites: the hunter(jumps and attacks), smoker (pulls players away), boomer (spits zombie attracting goo) and of course the dreaded Tank(a killer hulk) plus witch(crying killer) who now will walk around, not just sit as she did in the previous L4D. It is a TEAM game, so if a player goes solo, they likely will die. Team work for the win.



NEW MODES

If that's not enough for you they have also added some more modes. Realism mode does not highlight your team mates making it more difficult to differentiate zombies from players as well as make it very difficult to find them if you stray from the team. Less items are found and when a player dies you won't see them again until you reach the check point. Competitive mode is a survival vs zombies fight where the survivors must accomplish a task while the other human team of special infected try to stop them. They still have versus mode as well as survival mode too.



NEW CHARACTERS

The characters are all new, although i must say the last group was more fun. They had better lines, who could not love Francis (i hate buses. i hate water. i hate everything) or the old war vet, zoey, or crazy louis. The new characters obviously couldn't be the same - it wouldn't make sense. The AIs also seem to be more stupid than the last. However it may depend on settings. On realism normal, Coach was a complete moron who would literally attack the witch when we were all trying to avoid it and run off randomly. However in Expert all AIs seemed to be on top of killing special infected.



NEW ITEMS

Melee weapons, you have to give up your pistols but it's totally worth it. Nothing like slicing and dicing using a machete or axe. Or how about a chainsaw? Also new guns, lots of options and way more hardcore then the previous. In addition to the old faves(pipebomb, molotov) there's now boomer bile to get zombies to attack each other. Also there's now adrenaline shots to make you faster to run through a horde or revive players. That's right, REVIVE. IF you have a defibrillator you can zap them back to life. No more waiting for them to respawn.



ACHIEVEMENTS FROM STEAM

There's also a whole new set of achievements from STEAM which will keep you playing the game just to get all the requirements on the list. They also track your stats such as accuracy, maps played, zombies killed, etc.



PATCHES

As with any software, there are always bugs and problems found in the beginning as players go through it. Most of these problems seem to have been fixed. They have also been pretty quick about fixing the discovered map exploits on a few maps. New free of charge patches come in time to improve the game.



CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this game is definitely worth getting and you won't be able to stop playing. If you haven't bought L4D1 i suggest you buy the double pack on STEAM. Get both games for about $65. The first one is still great to play with new maps being created. If you love team play shooters, then you will definitely love this game.
